Art Therapy for Children Limerick

When your child is struggling, it can be hard to know what to do

As a parent, watching your child carry something difficult is one of the hardest experiences there is. You want to help, but they can't always tell you what's wrong.

Sometimes they don't have the words. Sometimes they don't even know themselves. Art therapy offers a different way in, one that doesn't ask children to explain themselves before they're ready.

Why Art Therapy Works for Children & Young People

Children are natural makers. Long before they can articulate how they feel, they draw, build, paint and play. Art therapy works with that instinct. Rather than sitting across from an adult and being asked how they feel, a child can simply pick up a pencil or press their hands into clay, and something begins to move.

As an art therapist for children in Limerick, I create a space where there's no right or wrong, no pressure to perform or explain. The focus is entirely on the child, what they need, what they're carrying, and what they're ready to explore. Often, the art does the talking long before the words arrive.

What I Can Help With

Children and young people come to art therapy for all kinds of reasons. Anxiety and worry are among the most common, but I also work with young people experiencing low confidence, social difficulties, emotional dysregulation, bereavement, family changes and the pressures that come with school life. Some children have experienced trauma. Others are simply going through something that feels bigger than they can manage alone.

I welcome neurodivergent young people warmly, and have experience creating a therapeutic space that feels safe, manageable and genuinely supportive for children who experience the world a little differently.

A Note for Parents

Before your child's sessions begin, I'll meet with you for an initial conversation. This is a chance for you to share your child's background, what you've noticed, and what you're hoping for. It also gives you a chance to ask anything you need to, so you feel settled before your child walks through the door.

Throughout the process, I maintain your child's confidentiality, because that trust is essential to the work. At the same time, I'll keep you informed in a general sense of how things are progressing. You're part of this too.

How Sessions Work

I work with children and young people from the age of five upwards. Sessions are one hour long and are offered in eight-week blocks, at the same time each week, in the same calm, welcoming studio space in Limerick. A range of art materials are available, including drawing, painting, collage and sculpture, and children are free to choose what they work with.

Art facilitation is also available for schools and groups, offering a supported creative space outside of a therapeutic context. If you're interested in this for a school or community setting, I'd be happy to chat.

If you're wondering whether art therapy might help your child, the best place to start is a conversation. Get in touch and we can take it from there, gently and without any pressure.
